Here’s the first of several more Regnard settings, most of them short (settigns of stanzas rather than whole poems). With a ‘sad’ text, there’s plenty of opportunity for sharpened and flattened notes to give it that ‘minor’ flavour. Quite a lot of chattering crotchets too, though in a slow-ish setting they flow rather than sparkle.

The recorded extract is the end of the chanson, from “Tant j’ay grand peur…” onwards, illustrating the effect of all those chromatic notes.

About fattoxxon

Who am I? Lover of all sorts of music - classical, medieval, world (anything from Africa), world-classical (Uzbek & Iraqi magam for instance), and virtually anything that won't be on the music charts... Lover of Ronsard's poetry (obviously) and of sonnets in general. Reader of English, French, Latin & other literature. And who is Fattoxxon? An allusion to an Uzbek singer - pronounce it Patahan, with a very plosive 'P' and a throaty 'h', as in 'khan')
