Regnard – Le ciel ne veut

Le ciel ne veut, dame

François Regnard

Poésies de P. de Ronsard et autres Poëtes, 1579

A more substantial Regnard setting this time, in two parts but still setting only the two quatrains of the sonnet. Regnard sems not to have worried too much about the poetic form, the song was what matterd to him! Once again the second half, with its ‘sadder’ feel, has a lot more chromaticism – but for me the more interesting part is the opening where Regnard really indulges himself in some proper polyphony with the voices largely independent.

Sadly, no-one seems to have recorded this piece so I cannot point you at a recorded extract.

About fattoxxon

Who am I? Lover of all sorts of music - classical, medieval, world (anything from Africa), world-classical (Uzbek & Iraqi magam for instance), and virtually anything that won't be on the music charts... Lover of Ronsard's poetry (obviously) and of sonnets in general. Reader of English, French, Latin & other literature. And who is Fattoxxon? An allusion to an Uzbek singer - pronounce it Patahan, with a very plosive 'P' and a throaty 'h', as in 'khan')
